I think that you have to remember that you're just trying to put your opponents in a lose-lose situation. If a guy is in a pot with a gutshot draw and he's getting 5 to one to call now he's in a lose-lose situation (this particular situation is closer for him). If he folds you obviously make money because you increase your winning chances. If he calls he's making you money because he's betting a dog and you're betting a favorite. It's like he's willing to pay you $1.20 if you flip a coin and it comes heads but will take only $1.00 from you if it comes up tails. In this particular case I think calling was going to maximize your expectation but it's pretty close.
