While working the floor last night, a guy I have never seen before comes walking in, beelines toward me and rudely says "If you comp me dinner I'll get in that game." While feeling like I'm getting blackmailed I say "Well, we comp players depending on how long they play...". He interrupts and says he wants dinner comped immediately. Annoyed, I say "I can't do that." He mills around for 10 minutes or so and walks out.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think his point was that the guy wanted to be comped specifically for playing in a "Free Roll". I dont think he felt threatened at all.

In my experience, dealers who have just been promoted to floormen have very poor people skills. I think it's because dealers put up with so much sht from the players. Unfortunately, people skill is probably the most important skill for any floorman to have. The thing you have to remember is that the card players and gamblers are customers and thus demand a bit of ass kissing respect on your part.

It's not clear to me why you were annoyed when the customer asked to get his meal comped. He probably pays alot of money to play at the casino. He was asking for a deal and you are the one in charge of deals. He made an offer. You can accept or decline and it's your job to do make that decision AND be nice to the customer. I really don't understand why you felt blackmailed. Did he threaten your family or something?

How about I comp you trail mix and beer if you get into thte freeroll? Oh yeah, everybody gets that.

That's the funny thing about the freeroll - free booze. I hate running this tourney...

tempting.... tempting.... checking website now!

edit: haha... the front page of the gilpin poker room STILL says, "Frequent bad beats." Instead of "frequent jackpot hands." Classic colorado poker, there... at least it's telling the truth.

For certain people, you can go ahead and use my patented "kick them in the nuts" move. I'm sure you know which ones I'd give you the OK for.

Here's one, not poker but still the same...

I was playing $2 craps at boulder one night, and I had thrown a point of six. The table was mostly empty, and I was the only one at my end. I should note that I had a nice cold beer to keep me company, and I was quite happy to stand there and toss the dice all alone.

Then this schmuckola comes up. He tries to place $75 on the pass line. The base dealer pushes back his bet and says "sir, there's a point already." So this schmuck says "$25 hard eight."

I then procede to roll eight, the hard way. Schmuck collects $225, and still up on his hard eight.

Next, this schmuck tries once again to place $75 on the pass line. AGAIN the base dealer says to him "sir, there's already a point, the point is six." Dealer again pushes back the bet. Note that at this time, the come box has plenty of open space in it, available for anyone to use.

I roll another hard eight. Schmuck collects another $225.

Now the schmuck puts up his $75 for a THIRD time on the pass line. Note the point is still six. I then procede to seven-out, line away.

Now the schmuck has a friggin' COW because he was s'poseda win on the seven. The friggin' box man is so annoyed he finally relents and lets the schmuck take his bet back (I would NOT have let him have it back, BTW).

Now the schmuck gets MAD at the boxman! He takes his winnings and storms off in a huff.

Someone please HOLD this schmuck so I can kick him in the nuts several times.

"I think I'd rather work at Mcdonalds and get minimum wage then walk around for hours getting .50 in comps. "

"A lot of older poeple that have nothing to do all day do this. "

If I am that pathetic when I get old please kick me in the nuts.

The valet passes at Canterbury are freely given by any floor to any player. Just ask.

The Krispy Kremes at 5:00 am are 100% free.

Soft drinks are free (plus tip).

Drinks cost money. That sucks, not because I drink, but because I like other people to drink.

I was gonna make a comment but then realzied I depend solely on work and trips to Vegas/Canterbury for all human contact, and even worse yet, potential ladies to hook up with -

I'd let you kick me in the nuts, but life is already taking is turn - get in line behind him -

A few good points here for sure. Some floor folks are not "people persons".

...card players and gamblers are customers and thus demand a bit of ass kissing respect on your part.
Respect, yes. Ass kissing? OK...a bit. But comps come AFTER you play - at least for a little while - as a sort of reward. Getting dinner for free BEFORE ever playing is not happening.

It's not clear to me why you were annoyed...
He was rude and wanted something for nothing, which always bugs me. I wasn't rude back to him. I just politely said "I can't do that" after he cut me off mid-sentence (another thing that really bugs me) and demanded a free dinner immediately.

He probably pays alot of money to play at the casino.
Like I wrote in the OP, I never saw this guy before. Maybe he's a slot player...fine. Ask the slot club for comps if that's the case.

He made an offer. You can accept or decline and it's your job to do make that decision AND be nice to the customer.
I declined and I was nice. He was rude and demanding.

I really don't understand why you felt blackmailed.
He said " If you comp me dinner, I'll get into that game". He din't say "Will you comp me dinner if I play here for a while?" See the difference? If he said the latter, I would have said "Sure. What game are you interested in playing?". But he cut me off and made his demand before I could even explain to him how we comp people.

Customers are expected to respect the floormen as well.
