Re: Manny for Abreu
Eh. Matsui's defense isn't that much better, and even though he's played every game while Ramirez had "only" played 154, 152 and 152 games in the same three seasons, Ramirez has managed to hit more homers and drive in more runs. I've never heard of the stat "etc" but I'm sure Ramirez's is higher than Matsui's.
And yes, I'm sure there's a lot of reasons on the Yankee message boards explaining why Matsui is a stone bargain at 13 per. |

Re: Manny for Abreu
[ QUOTE ]
I'm at school (PSU) so I can't listen to WIP/WYSP, sadly. [/ QUOTE ] It's available on the web, 610wip.com [ QUOTE ] Anyway, I'm surprised to hear that. I don't understand why getting rid of Bobby would be such a priority, guys that produce 30/30 every year don't exactly grow on trees. [/ QUOTE ] His stats are hollow - he's lazy in the outfield and never produces in the clutch... he's worthless to this team - getting rid of him immediately while he's got a decent amount of value should be a top priority for the new GM. Personally, I'd have loved to have seen him get out of town a while ago. |

lazy in the outfield [/ QUOTE ] No argument here. Atleast Burrell tries in the outfield. [ QUOTE ] and never produces in the clutch... [/ QUOTE ] Looking quickly, here are Abreu's numbers for "close and late" situations according to espn. Average about 95 AB per year. 2005: .298 AVG, .993 OPS, 6 HR 2004: .255 AVG, .867 OPS, 3 HR 2003: .318 AVG, .844 OPS, 2 HR 2002: .303 AVG, .938 OPS, 3 HR For comparison, his career is: .303 AVG, .923 OPS. So his numbers aren't great except this past year. What really stands out is the low number of HR; to compare, Howard hit 6 this past year. The fact that he doesn't produce in the clutch is something I hear commonly, but it's not like he is David Bell awful in the clutch. I generally pray for Bell to strikeout when people are on base so he doesn't GIDP. [ QUOTE ] he's worthless to this team - getting rid of him immediately while he's got a decent amount of value should be a top priority for the new GM. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not so sure. If you can get good starting pitching for him, then obviously they have to make that move. But moving Abreu for another lazy, strikeout prone outfielder just won't solve their problems. Their problems are pitching and Bell, not Abreu. EDIT: And striking out, obviously. |

Abreu or Burrell needs to be traded, if our batting order is once again Abreu/Burrell/Howard batting in succession, that's 3 100+ strikeout guys in a row that cant help but swing at the first pitch (like the rest of the team). That needs to be addressed. |

Re: Manny for Abreu
It looks like they want to use Abreu to trade for a #1 starting pitcher. Gillick just had a press conference for the Tom Gordon signing and he said they were concentrating on adding to the front end of the rotation.

[ QUOTE ] you think so? I can't think of any deals w/ an AAV of $19m that have been signed recently. there are now a # of $13-$15m guys, but $19M? well, lets look at the most recent, paul konerko. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not gonna crunch the numbers, but if you also look at the contract Hideki Matsui got this offseason, it's hard to make a case that Manny is grossly overpaid. [/ QUOTE ] usuing the same formula as with manny/PK/BA: matsui should prject to about 46.3 BRAR this year, at 13m is 3.56 runs per million spent. matsuis deal is better tham mannys. we should give the yankees credit on this one |

"he's lazy in the outfield" Have you seen Manny out there? Words fail. [/ QUOTE ] Indeed I have. Let me be quite clear that Manny's defensive skills in the outfield would be an upgrade over Bobby Abreu. Watch something like 10 complete Phillies games in a row, you'll see.
