Another stupid present thread: 2 questions

OK, my girlfriend's birthday is coming up soon and I don't know what to get. I have a few ideas, but I'm not sure if she would like any of them. We are both 25. We have been dating for a few years and are quite serious. I have no problem spending a couple hundred bucks on this. So here are my 2 questions:

1. Should I mention an idea or a few ideas to her to see what she wants, or does that show that I don't know what she wants and is therefore worse than just getting something that she may or may not like?

2. If I should just get her something, any good suggestions for what it should be? She has an old iPod so I was considering an iPod nano or a new iPod. And she is a girl, so obviously she likes jewelry and clothing and spas and stuff but I'm not sure exactly how to find something nice in that arena. She lives in Philadelphia if any gift suggestions are location specific.
