Re: Hotel Review - Luxor?
I don't know...I like the Luxor because they seem to be reasonably priced compared to the other Hotels on the Strip....Ask your concierge about free shuttles...they have everywhere...just people don't know about them. They have that leaves from the Tropicana every 30 minutes to the RIO and Palms....
Tropicana is also affordable.... I you want really cheap then stay at Palace Station...it is really out of the way...but they are super cheap and they have a shuttle that drops you off on South Strip every 30 minutes...and picks at the same place to.... |

Re: Hotel Review - Luxor?
Definite fish fest- Luxor had friendly tourists willing drop $200 "trying out" poker and by far the dumbest local player's that I played with (MGM, Monte, Mandalay) on the strip. If you're there on Sunday play during the "most wins" tourney and watch the locals drop $$$ chasing a $300+ prize.

Re: Hotel Review - Luxor?
Luxor has decent hotel rooms. They're not even close to Bellagio rooms though. Mirage has pretty nice rooms also, especially for an older casino.
If you're planning to play poker center strip such as at the Bellagio or Mirage, then I would definitely pick one of those places. If you're planning to play poker at the South end of the strip (MGM, Excalibur, etc.) then I would recommend staying at the Luxor. Taxis in Las Vegas are very expensive, and you can easily rack up a hundred bucks in taxi fees with just a few trips back and forth. |

Re: Hotel Review - Luxor?
There is also s bus that runs right down the strip for a dollar or 2. But if you plan on not drinking i would say rent a car, it will save you a bunch on cab rides. Last time i was there i rented one for $120 for the whole week.

Re: Hotel Review - Luxor?
You can travel all over the strip without paying for cab rides pretty easily. There is a tram between Monte Carlo and Bellagio, between the Mirage and Treasure Island, and between Excalibur and Mandalay Bay (which includes a Luxor stop)- all for free. On the other side of the street, there is a monorail that runs pretty much the length of the strip and beyond for like $2 a ride or something.
I made it from the Bellagio poker room to the Mandalay Bay poker room in about 30 minutes; I doubt I could do it much faster in rental car (time spent walking to and from the garage, plus the soul-crushing traffic on LV Blvd). A cab might be marginally faster, but definitely more expensive. |

Re: Hotel Review - Luxor?
The rooms are OK. Not great. Probably about on par with a Marriott or so. I.e., a step above a Holiday Inn, but nothing special. The towels were very thin and non-absorbant, though. And no high-speed internet, in case that matters to you (not that you'll be playing internet poker in Vegas).
The 24 hr cafe is terrible. I heard so many bad things about the Luxor buffet, that we didn't even bother to eat there. It's an OK hotel, one I would stay in again if there were no other choices. But we're talking Vegas, there are plenty of choices. |

What's the deal for free at Golden Nugget -- is it open to others, or something special that wouldn't apply?

Re: Hotel Review - Luxor?
Wow peoples reading comprehension skills are awful.
OP said that he is now probably staying at GN because rooms are free. They are free to OP because his brother gets a daily per diem and presumably the rooms are cheap enough at GN that the per diem covers the entire cost. That said, I think downtown is great. Pretty bad for mid limit or better poker, but otherwise outstanding. Just the notion that you can buy a plastic football full of the equivalent of 5 bottled beers for $6 is fine and dandy with me. That you can walk out on the open street consuming it while listening to bad cover bands play is icing on the cake! |
