Default Information for Beginner

Here's my deal. I'm 24 and will be graduating with a history degree in December.

I have nothing lined up for 2006 or onwards. I dislike working for people and eventually want to work for myself. I've always been interested in the stock market. I don't even know where to start though. I have an adequate bankroll from poker playing, some of which I wouldn't mind using to dabble in the stock market if I was able to figure it out at all.

Where can I get some good information? Are there any good books out there?
