I recently was playing in this three table sit and go. We were down to 11 players in the whole tournament and I was in tenth position. My chip stack was almost a third of the average stack and my table image was very tight as I had been getting a very cold run of cards so I had started to become a lot more looser with my pre-flop play.
In this hand the player in first position is a fairly aggressive and solid player. He limps in. I raise with my ATo he raises to all-in. Now because he originally limped in first position I never even considered him coming in with any high pocket pair. I took the chance and called. Am I right in my thinking? I have never seen any decent player limp in with AA or high pair in first position. Has anyone else?

I don't play NL . . . but when a solid, tight player in EP limps and reraises my ATo all-in, I would think I would find a fold pretty damn quickly.

I'm a limit player but the rule of thumb is that an open limp/reraise generally means a large pocket pair, nearly always AA or KK.
Easy fold there.

You misplayed this hand severely, for a number of reasons. There is nothing wrong with openlimping aces in a 10 handed game, especially if it is fairly aggressive and you are planning to come over the top of a raise you are pretty sure is coming. Further, you called a limp-reraise with A/10... wtf did you think he had that your A/10 beat? His hand is screaming strength. There are more reasons why this was a bad call (the fact that it was a tournament, your chip position relative to the rest of the table, etc. etc.), but I won't go into it. This is a fold, and its not even close.

Exactly - and in this case, when it's 5 handed, you might even be more likely to see people making plays like this.

To the OP - definitely have to fold here. I won't go nearly as far as saying that the player in first position has to have AA or KK here, but it's going to be a big hand - and AT will almost never be a favorite over it.

I don't play tournaments or NL much, but in very tight or very agressive limit cash games, I open limp-reraise aces fairly often. If an open raise is likely to get only the blinds, or a limp will usually be re-raised, it's the best play.

It is extremely common for people to limp in from 1st position with KK or AA. When playing in higher limit games (usually better players), I'm always watching out for the early limper.
