Default The use of \"matriculation\"

The dude on sportcenter always says something like "he matriculated the ball down the field." I was always under the impression that to matriculate meant to enroll at a school. Is there some other accepted meaning of "matriculate" that I'm missing out on here? Or is the ESPN dude an [censored]?

The only accepted meaning of "matriculate" is the one you are familiar with.

It's poking fun at Hank Stram, who urged his players to "keep matriculating the ball down the field" during Super Bowl IV.
