Default I have absolutely no idea what to do

BB is loose and passive preflop and quite passive postflop.

Party Poker 1.00/2.00 Hold'em (6 handed) link

Preflop: Hero is CO with A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
1 folds, Hero raises, 2 folds, BB calls.

Flop: (4.50 SB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players)
BB bets, Hero does what and why?

Folds. You have no idea where you stand, the pot isn't too big, you may not have very many outs. I would fold against most opponents but:

I assume you are talking about villain here. This makes your fold 10 times easier. If you were indeed talking about yourself, then I suggest you work hard at fixing that.

Mucks that [censored]. You're either behind or are very likely to be soon, the pot is quite small, and the chances that you can get them to fold a better hand are slim. Your backdoor draw sux. Your ace is not so hot. Raising may buy you a free card but it's almost certainly not worth it. Fold.

Well, given that you're quite passive postflop, obviously you call here.

Just kidding. If BB is loose/passive, I think you should fold here. There was a Jason Pohl article that went into this situation in detail in that short-handed play articles pack that was floating around a while ago. He did all of the math and basically concluded that you should fold when a passive player donks into you from their blind and you didn't connect.

Actually, I think he found that if you think you can get a free card from BB by raising, it's marginally profitable to do that, but his scenario involved having two overcards to the flop. Here, even if you hit an eight, it might not be good, so I think you can feel good about mucking.

GME,

IIRC Jason Pohl's articles pack advocates folding even when you have two overs.

OP: this is a pretty easy fold.

Yeah, that's correct. I was just thinking out loud that he found in the article that if you have two overs, and you're very confident you can get a free card, it's slightly profitable to raise. I figured that given the read on villain, probably you could get a free card here, but then when I re-read the hand I saw that we've only got one over.

So, this is an easy muck.
