Gripping tape uh? Well that explains it. Thanks guys for the web site and the explanation. On the show I watched I just didn't notice the tape. Plus today's skateboards seem to be much more flexible, which allows for a great deal of bounce, compared with the solid-wood skateboard I had as a kid in the early 1970's.(no kidding, solid wood with stone-like wheels). Anyway, mystery solved.

Thanks again.

I think you may be misinterpreting and/or the other poster didn't explain it well -
Your feet don't really stick to the grip tape. The front foot really is just levelling out the board, not lifting it up by being stuck to it.
It's as simple as the back wheels acting as a fulcrum. You stomp down on the tail and the front part of the board pops into the air.
If you were stand behind the board and stomp down on the tail, you'd see pretty easily how the board gets completely off the ground.

I am a former skateboarder. Doing an ollie is a real pain at the beginning. But now, even after 3 years of non-skate, I can still do it.

I think this is how it is done :
You jump, pushing a little more on your back foot. The board will then make an angle. While doing the angle, you are accending up in the air.

The angle combined with the grip makes enough friction that your front foot drag the skate into the air. Then you just positionate the board with your foot ( so it is straight)

Default skateboarding and ed moncada. . .

I ollied my first fire hydrant back in 1990, and now I don't think I could even jump over one. Recent wsop winner Ed Moncada used to skate also. We had a several hour long discussion about teh good old days of H-Street and Bill Danforth at a strip club in December. In fact, poker seems like a logical follow-up hobby to those that used to skate, since it fosters the kind of loner, independant (pun intended) mindset that skating did. . .

I think it's called an 'ollie'. Some people are better at it than others.
