Default Pay Day!!! (or is it?)

Today is supposed to be payday. My boss is not here, but the checks arrived from our Washington office today. They are sitting on my boss's desk as we speak. Now, yesterday, he told me he was coming in today, and it is now 2pm, and I have not seen him.

The money probably isn't a huge deal, but I would much rather that money be in my bank account, rather than be on my boss's desk. Plus, I have a bank account with Chase, and out of state checks, such as this, take a whopping 5 days to clear.

So, what should I do? Should I open the package with the check and "steal" the payment I have earned, or wait until Tuesday when everyone is back in the office (NYSE closed Monday for New Years, no one will be here)?

why not call your boss and ask you nit. No book keeper or CFO I presume either? or other company officer?

Can you call your boss and find out if it is ok to take the check out? If you don't need the money then I would probably pass on getting the check yourself. I would definitely tell someone first before taking anything. What about a secretary that could get it for you?

Call your boss. Opening the envelope would be a HUGE breach.

This is my business's payday, we gave everybody their post-dated checks last week so this wouldn't happen.

I'm in almost the same boat. My checks aren't here though. I do have the capability of writing my own check if need be, but I'm sure that would be frowned upon. If I don't see my boss by 4:00, I'm calling him. I need some party money this weekend. And I don't want to have to log into Neteller to get it.

I got my check a day early! I was SHOCKED to find a full bank account yesterday.

there is no direct deposit. I work for a smallish private equity firm in midtown Manhattan (well, the office is small, but the firm is a billion dollar firm...), and they do not offer it.
