Default I pray before I play

So what should a poker player prayer for? I pray for humility becuase if the good Lord doesn't humble me the cards certainly will.

I think prayer is 0 EV. I occasionally indulge in it, just in case I'm wrong and it's actually +EV.

It can be seriously -EV. Faith healing comes to mind.

Here's the problem with Pasquale's wager:

Pascale assumes (correctly) that believing in god might bring you salvation, happiness, eternal life in heaven etc.

He also assumes that not believing in god has negative consequences, like living outside of god's grace, etc.

He only considers two possibilities. Its an equation that is based on the exclusive question : "Is christianity true?"

There are however, other questions, like "Is it possible that the more I pray to god the more he hates me, and the more I will suffer in the afterlife?" Or "Is it possible that the real god is angry at me for praying to a fake god?"

I think all of these things, and many more are equally possible, given that there is no evidence to support them.

Now, assuming that there is no "otherworld" I think that prayer is a good way for some people to meditate on their lives.

I suppose in the same way meditation has value, prayer does too.

Thank you for making this excellent point.

Poker actually promotes various forms of personal virtue, such as 100% accountability to self for all results.

You winners know what I'm talking about.
