setting the bear trap at the ol' 200nl

hero has 200$
villain has 150$

preflop hero is on button with A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

only villain limps, hero makes it 8$, villain calls.

reads: villain is super tight preflop but will try to push you off a hand if he suspects you have AK..

flop (18.75$):

T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

now normally i'd 15$-pot this spot, but instead i check when checked to me.

turn (18.75$):

[T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]] 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

now when it's checked to me i bet 5$, villain thinks and thinks and comes over the top to 20$. I push.

See the problem is now you win $20 extra (maybe) but lose $150 when behind 100% of the time. I'd bet the flop, check the turn and raise the river.

Ugh, he will probably only call when he has you crushed. Just call his c/r on the turn.

Re-read what you wrote about the villian. Why would you push the turn if he reads you for a bluff?

I have no problem with checking a flop like this once in a while. But when he checkraises, you are either way ahead or drawing to two outs. He folds 100% of the time you are ahead, and calls 100% of the time he is ahead (since he'd have to have a fullhouse).

Just call the turn and see what he does on the river.

I don't really like this one. Limp call from a tight player usually means a low/mid PP. Unless he is an idiot here (or 2% played his KK really really weird) its a win $20 (no set)/lose $150 (set).

When you push u either wanna do it when u know your beat (bluff or semibluff) or when you are have a great hand and expect opponent to have a 2nd best hand that would put his chips in the middle) pushing into a small pot when you are unsure and the only thing that calls you beats you is going to hurt.

i was fairly certain i'd get the responses that i got along the lines of ew i don't like that. and in retrospect, you're right from an objective view. however, the villain here wasn't a true ABC nut peddler but he seemed more along the evolution line of figuring he can make more $ with his low PP's and trying to read hands of his opponents.

he called, had 99 river bricked MHIG.

either way you look at it, i agree 100% with everyone here that he'll call with sets...the majority of the time. i rarely do this however and felt i can get away with it against the opponent. thanks again for the thoughts!

no need to get tricksey, just bet the flop. This isnt 2k nl, opponents really arent that observant. I dont like push, just call here and raise his river bet instead or raise a smaller amount.

you're right this isn't 2k nl. it also isn't 2nl. if this was 200nl at the casino i'd be all for your thinking. however, this is mid-stakes and believe it or not, poker players CAN be good.

I'd assume he'd be more likely to think a full PSB is what you'd do with missed AKo. I've won decent pots like that by inducing bluffs from [censored] hands by betting full pot to resemble a steal.
