INSTRUCTION : Developing Point-Based System

Hey guys,

We've got an upcoming game this friday...mostly guys from work. A couple of these guys really CAN'T play cards...they lose every time...and quickly. While this is normally a good thing, it will eventually end up causing them to stop playing because they just feel like they're donating their cash. This got me to trying to think of a way to teach very basic hold'em guidelines to help a newbie at least keep their head above water in a home game type environment.

I then through of a point-based system on the way in today. I'm sure someone's developed something similar already....but I've not read about it as of yet. Wondering what everyone thinks and I'd really like to get some feedback.

The game in question is a loose-playing NL Hold'em Tourney (homegame style) with fairly deep starting stacks (~40+ BB)....typically 6-8 players sitting

PREFLOP:

Card Values =
A, K, Q = 1 point
J, T = 0.5 point
Suited = 0.25 point
Connectors = 0.25 point
Paired = 1 points

Needed to Call Preflop = 1 point
Needed to Raise (3x BB) Preflop (or call a raise) = 2 points

FIRST EDIT: Changed JT to 0.25 points... eliminates the problem of calling any J or T suited, but allows you to limp with JTs, and still allows a limp with AJ or AT offsuit but won't encourage a raise with QTs (like before)

Problem: Still encourages limping with any A, K or Q....

Only Play:
• Top Pair (be wary of kicker if raised more than 3x BB)
• 4 to Outside Straight or Flush
• Inside Straight only if 3+ people will be seeing the turn for BB
• Middle/Low pair only with overcard and only for 1BB
• Pocket Pairs (below TT) that don't flop trips fold to any bet larger than 1BB

BB = Big Blind

Curious about everyone's thoughts.... what is a better way to simplify the postflop play (or is that pretty simple?) The goal is to help Joe Six-pack keep his head above water in a friendly home game...
