Default Get a clue, guys

Why don't you guys get it? David has been playing poker in Vegas for 30 years. In all that time, he has always passed on what he considered "bad" games. He is a business person, first and foremost. His books promote the idea of playing against weaker opponents.

David didn't get to the position he is in (financially) by making poor bets. He got there by exploiting each and every offer (from casinos, sportsbooks, and yes, other players) that he mathematically figured to be +EV.

Sure, I'd like to see him put up the kind of money Daniel is asking for, but that's between David and his bankroll, and his comfort level. Just because others are willing to risk more money, does not make David less of a player, less of a man, or less of a math genius. Probably, it just reenforces the belief that you take "good" bets, and you do better than risking "bad" ones to save face.

Also, remember the original offer came from Daniel, it was not a challenge from David.

Any of you dissenters playing in the $10K WSOP? If not, why? I'm not, because I haven't won a seat, and don't think it's +EV for me. Is David allowed to use the same logic?

I agree with you 100% dogmeat, however DS will simply not say "No , Daniel i won't play you" which is all he has to say to end this.

[ QUOTE ]
I have to weigh in on this pissing match between Daniel and David. My opinion of both of them has been dramatically reduced by this entire fiasco. I have no idea why Daniel is so fired up about this thing. Either he has been reading too much of his fanmail or he has some agenda here. Either way he is taking the low road. For a guy who can be considered the best poker player in the past 2-3 years it seems foolish on his part.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think Daniel got irked by comments by David about his being an underdog in these heads-up contests. Also he was probably annoyed at David's smug assessments about how much could be won or lost at the big game, when David doesn't even play in that game, and I'm guessing has no direct knowledge who wins what.

Let's face it, some people here find Sklansky's egomania a bit grating: "I could have won a noble prize. I could beat the stock market. I'm a math prodigy." Etc. etc.

Daniel probably thinks he is a better poker player than David, and just wanted to call Sklansky's bluff.

As for David, his tactics remind me of a prize fighter who really doesn't want to accept a challenge by a fighter he is afraid is superior; stalling by complaining about the venue, the brand of gloves, ring size, choice of referees, etc. etc.

As for this it would be a coin flip stuff, and David having to be EV+....

It has always bugged me when people confuse talent with personality. If I like someone's acting, it doesn't mean I have to like them as a person. The fact that Bobby Hull was a wife beater did not detract from his slapshot.

Sklansky's poker related advice is the best grounding you are going to get. I don't give a [censored] what he looks like, what his politics are, or if he "plays well with others".

Same goes for DN. If he comes across as an ass, I could care less. His tournament results say he knows how to play tournament poker. I don't care if he got his driver's license while he was still in Grade 3.

If his intent was to stay clear of it than why did he open his big mouth and start talking about how he is better than Daniel at certain games? Daniel made a blanket offer not an offer to David. David felt compelled to tell us that he is Daniel's equal even though he demands 5-4 odds.

I agree with Transient. Daniel lost his cool after Daivd kept spouting off.

I'm finding it increasingly amusing how some people just won't accept DS doesn't want to start flipping coins for $100k-500k.

[/ QUOTE ]

When his expectation is positive, it's not a coin flip.

If he is backed even 50% by 2+2'ers, which I think he could be easily, I'd say it's an easy bet to take, ESPECIALLY since he thinks he is a favorite in the game. If he is a 10% favorite, Which i'd guess might be low for that game for him vs Daniel and is getting a 10% loss rebate, I'm not gonna go through all the actual #'s, but it seems right off the top he has about a 15%% edge. If so, that's $7500 value. I'm also sure that he could easily get backed by us for the full 50k, if not almost ANY amount up to the 500K under these terms. I'd be in for 5k. Of course, if he DID play for 500k, he'd only need 450k, but that's semi-obvious.

ANd again, I have no idea why he wouldn;t want publicity, although I guess it has been addressed elsewhere. My only guess is that DS thinks it could hurt his book sales were he to lose. Either way, there's little chance of the results never coming out.
