I'd kill for a job like this, but if you hate it, yeah...quit. Find another job first though. This is key.

...or so you think. I currently have a job like this and have had others in the past. I'd much rather be busy all day, otherwise each hour absolutely drags into the next and your days start to feel like weeks. I'm doing everything in my power to get out of it.

I've considered playing poker here, but that is probably pushing it.

You don't know till you try. I'd test this one out. Whats the worst that could happen, get fired? You are gonna quit eventually anyway.

Fixed your post. If you are allowed to look at porn you could easily be busy eight hours a day for the rest of your life without browsing the same site twice. I [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] the Internet.

I am 30. I work in software development. I commute an hour and a half to and from work. It is Monday through Friday 800 to 600. I get a hour lunch which I rarely take. I am paid a decent salary, but since it isn't six figures in NYC, its not that great. I have acceptable benefits. I have been here for 8 years. Here is a typical day:

Get in somewhere between 8:30 and 9:00. Read hundreds of work related e-mail. Begin a list of daily assigned responsibilities. I will do this for about 1-2 hours.

Mid-morning I will begin working on whatever projects I am currently assigned to. Typically, I will have 4-5 things to me assigned at a given time, so there is a lot of context switching back and forth.

Lunch/bathroom break if I can get away from the desk.

More work, interrupted incessantly by meetings.

If its a typical day, my passive aggressive boss, who works bizarre hours, will pop by my desk and yell at me for not keeping him abreast of what I am doing.

I tell my wife that I hate it, but she tells me that I am being paid to support our household and it is something for my marginal resume.

Obviously I hate it and I feel like I am wasting my life. But I am making money (relatively very little) and I pretty much bust my ass all day and am a dick to my wife when I get home because I am so cranky/exhausted. Quit?

See the problem is if he gets caught and they fire him, he can't list this job in his resume', or he has to hope that any future employer will not call his previous employer to find out about him.

To o.p.: Just start looking for another job because it sounds like your unhappy there, but don't quit until you've lined something up.

Patrick's advice for the OP is awesome for you too.

This part here:

[/ QUOTE ] seals the deal. Find a better/better paying job and then quit.

Get a raise or leave if you don't like it. Make it worth your while one way or the other. That kind of commute is absurd. Your whole day is wasted. I'd definitely look elsewhere. 8 years? That's forever in this day and age. It's not like it used to be where someone worked for one company from college to retirement.

I'm a software engineer as well. What language? With 8+ years experience, you should be able to get a really good paying job if you use the right types of technology.
