Default Index Fund Information...

From what I've read in this forum and in A Random Walk Down Wall Street, an index fund seems to be the best bet for me, since I'm only going to invest a couple thousand. Does this seem right?
Also are their any good books that deal a lot with index funds, I dont know much about them but I heard its a good way to go.
Any information on Index funds would be of help. Thanks

Here's three that cover the topic quite well. There's a lot of overlap among the books, so check one out from your local library and you should get the idea.
