Default 2001FP

Cross posted from Tech help, because I'd like a quick response. Mods can delete this if they feel like it.

Please note: I'm dumb about computers.
Just got my Dell 2001FP.
Plugged it, hooked it up, in turned it on. Nothing happens.
When I boot up my machine, I get Windows launch screens on the laptop monitor and the 2001fp.
But after that, nothing but a weird flicker if I move my mouse to the new monitor.
What settings do I need to check in the Display screen? Do I need new drivers or another video card?

I have a basic HP laptop, about a year old, if that helps.

OMG. You need to go to display settings and extend your desktop to the new monitor. Then you can make the new monitor the main monitor by going into advanced settings (display->settings->advanced). You suck for not posting a chick in this post.

I have no idea, but if I had to guess, it'd be that you weren't on the right input setting. On the bottom right of the monitors, try hitting the left most button to cycle through them all.

Just a guess.

This works great if I select 1400x1050.
But if I selcect 1600x1200, the monitor goes crazy. It looks like a scrambled tv channel.
No clue what's going on. Help would be much appreciated, since Dell is of no help.

and here's an airbrushed Canadian for the help
