Default Flop action and turn

Flop: (8.5 SB) J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] <font color="blue">(4 players)</font>
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, <font color="red">Hero bets</font>, <font color="red">MP3 raises</font>, BB folds, UTG+1 calls

Turn: (7.25 BB) 2[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] <font color="blue">(3 players)</font>
UTG+1 checks, <font color="blue">Hero...</font>

MP3 raised, just as expected, but UTG+1 stuck around. I don't have any reads on him. What's your action?

Check - fold if UTG calls because he'll probably have a J on this ragged board. If UTG folds I'd raise.

And that's exactly what happened. I checked, TAG bet, UTG called, I folded. River was a K, TAG bet, UTG called. TAG had AJ, UTG had 55.

I was unhappy with my play in that hand when reviewing it, but now I'm happy with the play, just unhappy with my thought process during the play. I understand the hand better now and think I played it well.

Good thing UTG blows or I would've lost a lot of dough

Did you just bet into the preflop raiser when you're not sure if he's going to auto-raise but he will auto-bet?

If I bet into him and he just calls, I'm ahead. If he raises, I may or may not be ahead, but he'll be forcing the other two players to call two cold, and hopefully I'll be heads up with him.

What do you do here?

I just check-call the flop and reevaluate on the turn. Your position makes it almost impossible to protect your hand.

See that's the problem with betting this flop. If you can get villain to raise a worse hand, then betting is clearly better than checking, but to bet and try to get this heads up with someone who, after three betting you usually has you beat, is pretty futile.

Suppose instead that he only calls our bet. This is still not the most favorable position because we bloat the pot with a vulnerable hand.

I really think that versus a TAG betting is not a great option here. We would know a lot more about its merits had you not limped preflop.

Bet/call the flop. Bet/fold a turn blank. If another over comes, c/f. If you end up betting the turn and he just calls, be very careful on the river (or river a 9). If no more overs come, I'd prolly c/c a non-[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] river. If an over comes, c/f and hope he ck's through.
