Default Top Set hits a bad board, river?

Hollywood Poker, 25NL. 10/25 cent blinds.

Just sat down, second hand in.

SB: 50.20
BB: 27.70
UTG: 5.70
MP: 28.75
CO: 113.05
Button: 25.60

Hero has the button and gets dealt 9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].

Preflop:
UTG folds, MP calls .25, CO calls .25, hero raises to .75, SB folds, BB calls, MP calls, CO calls.
(Looking back I know I probably should have raised a bit more - comments?)

Flop: (4 handed, Pot = 3.15)
5 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] 9 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]
BB checks, MP checks, CO checks, Hero bets 1.75, BB calls 1.75, MP folds, CO folds.

Turn: (2 handed, Pot = 6.65)
10 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]
BB checks, hero bets 3.50, BB calls 3.50

River: (2 handed, Pot = 13.65)
6 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]
BB checks, hero checks.

I thought about putting out a bet on the river but I saw to many hands that beat me. Comments on any street are welcome but I am more concerned with my river play. A check here is pretty standard?

I will post results later.

How is this a bad board for top set? You have the second nuts.

Also, why only half-pot bets on the flop and turn? Pot the flop, 3/4 pot the turn, I value bet the river for about 1/2 pot.

Whoops, I meant how is that a bad flop. Yeah, it's a little bit of a tough river, but I value bet.

he hasnt shown any strength yet, you HAVE to value bet this river. the fact that he called your flop bet means to me that QJ or 77 are pretty unlikely, as thats a bad board for both. If he is ahead of you now, he probably was ahead of you before, and should have bet or raised at some point.

Raise to $1.50 preflop. 3 or 4x BB + 1BB per limper is standard play. Bet pot or at least 2/3 pot on flop and turn and probably value bet this river for 1/2-2/3 potish folding to a raise, but checking behind isn't too bad given the pot size if you had bet better on earlier streets.
