Default Betting on the come

If you are betting with a draw to the nuts, should you encourage calls or discourage calls. Is it more profitable to win the pot right there, or to build a big pot for when you hit.

depends. what are your chances of winning without hitting the draw? how many opponents? limit/nl? tourny/cash? stacks? and so on.

it depends on number of opponents vs chance of making the winning hand, relative position to any preflop raisers. It essentially comes down to your pot equity and the action, i.e if say the bb had raised pf and there were 4 limpers before you and you flop the nut flushdraw, bb bets out, and 2 or more of the limpers call you should raise for value. However, if you were in the bb and the preflop raiser was on the button, and it checks to him and he bets, you are most likely best off to smoothcall and encourage other callers.

SSH has a comment on nearly exactly this situation and states it's pot dependent.

If the pot is small, you want to encourage callers. If the pot is large and you have overcards in addition to the draw, you want to protect your hand. If they call, you've got the nut draw, if they fold you've got a better chance of winning if you spike an overcard.
