Default Too lazy to search any more

So I've been lurking for a while and I'm completly stumped on how to find out more about VP$IP%. I don't have poker tracker and would like to know if my calculation of my VP$IP is correct.

Here is what I've come up with:

-VP$IP is related to starting hand requirements, right?

-I think I'm .20 playing these hands

*any pair =13
*AKs-A10s and off =8
*KQs-K10s and off =8
*QJs,Q10s,J10s,109s,108s=5

Total hands played = 33/169 or .20, right?

Am I on the right track with this or am I way off?

So if the above is correct if I add suited connecters 89s-54s I would be @ 38/169 or .22?

You can't look at it that way. You'll not play some hands in early position. You'll not play some hands when it is raised in front of you. You'll play more hands in late position. You'll play more hands in the blinds. It's situational depending on where you are relative to the button, the action in front of you, the players behind you, etc.

You don't calculate it, you measure it from your sessions at the table.

I'll say the obvious answer:

Get Poker Tracker and then you won't have to worry if your calculations are correct. Just be sure you understand exactly what it means.

This thread gives a good example of what sort of statistics some successful players have had. You can compare VPIP there if you want.

Well...if you follow SSHE tight game guidelines, you will be playing 10.25%, 18.25%, 23.07%, and 38.46% from early, middle, late, and the small blind respectively when not against a raise.

You will raise 4.98%, 8.14%, 10.26%, and 6.33% from early, middle, late, and the small blind respectively.

Just a guideline

VP$IP measures the percentage of times in which you voluntarily put money into the pot. So, while it is related somewhat to your starting hand requirements, you cannot calculate it simply by looking at what hands you play and dividing those by the total number of combinations possible. As Catt said, there are times when you should fold ATs and times when you should raise with it; the same applies to nearly every starting hand.

PokerTracker is easily worth its cost, but if you insist on playing without it for some reason, you can keep track of your own VPIP by dividing the number of times you did anything other than check or fold preflop by the total number of hands you played in each session. So if you played 100 hands and called or raised preflop in 20 of those hands, your VPIP would be 20%. If you call and fold preflop in one hand, that still counts as voluntarily putting money in the pot. But if you fold your blind to a raise, that does not count.
