Default WTF is Winfixer and how do I get rid of it??????????????

Xposted to the cpu help forum but no one reads that:

I don't understand how this happened.

I had some really weird stuff happening w/ my computer, so I reinstalled Windows. Everything went just fine, except for the fact that now I have something called Winfixer that won't go away -- it steals my browser window sometimes, but more often than not it opens up a new browser window that goes to WinFixer's home page and sometimes popups up a prompt box asking me to download it.

WTF is this spyware, and how do i get rid of it??

What I don't get is how this is already infecting my computer immediately after a Windows reinstall...I figured it would have cleared any spyware from the machine...i haven't even downloaded anything since the reinstall...

Did you format when you reinstalled? If so do you have any partitions or anything on your hd?

Thanks for the quick replies -- for the record, yes, I ran both Spybot and Adaware.
Each found a bunch of stuff (mostly tracking cookies), and removed them...but the Winfixer problem remains...

Not really quite sure what this means...but I used the Symantec PC Restore feature that comes preinstalled on all Dells (not the Windows XP Restore point feature). Returned my computer to its out-of-the-box state.

Teddy -

Try this link: Spyware Removal Guideline

They have instructions on how to remove WinFixer manually, or they have a link to download a Free 30 trial of SpySweeper, which will automatically remove it.
