Could someone please explain how these work? Suggesting that I should just go search is acceptable, but if it's not too complicated, could you help me out?

that's the program i use. there are other programs to download .torrent files but i like this one.

anyways once you have the program any .torrent file you get will be opened by it. the .torrent file contains information about the tracker where the file is located and it uses the program to access it.

say you are downloading a 700mb file, right at the start of the download your computer will allocate 700mb to it. then it will go to town. it will start downloading random parts of the file from many different users. while you are downloading it will upload complete parts of the file that you have to other users. once you have the whole file it will put it all together and it will be complete. then you can continue uploading it to other users or just shutdown the program and be a leech on society.

I wouldn't doubt it. This is my first try with an EPT torrent.

I'll take foreign language over Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten 99% of the time.

How long does this generally take? It's only downloading at like 1kb/sec, meaning it's going to be a long time. I use UW's internet, and things generally download much faster than this. Is there any trick to getting it to go faster (my current settings are on automatic)?

The file is like 170MB.

Your download speeds are the controlled by the seeders upload speeds. I'll max out my upload speed and seed this for a few days. Your speed should increase a bit.
