Default Funny proposition bet this morning

Funny story from this morning. I was late for work so I took a cab instead of taking the bus. The ride normally costs $6.00 from my house to work. The cabbie was taking me to my destination but refused to take a left turn on 42nd and Madison because he said you couldnt from 7am until 7pm. I told him he could. He said I was wrong, and drove past the intersection. At that point, I asked him if he'd be willing to wager me on who was right. I told him to go back around the block and lets check the sign again, and if I was right, the ride would be free, and he was right, I'd pay whatever more was on the meter. He agreed. So we drove back around the block (another $1.00 or so on the meter), and sure enough the sign said, "NO LEFT TURNS 7AM to 7PM, EXCEPT TAXIS WITH PASSENGERS". So my $6.00 ride was free. Afterwards, in thinking about this action, it occurred to me how stupid this guy was to take my proposition bet. For starters, I was completely sure I held the nuts, since I'd had this argument 6 months earlier with a cab driver. But he didnt know that. What he should have known, however, was that he was taking a $6.00 risk, and i'm taking a $1.00 risk, thus he's laying me 6:1 odds. What a fish.

NH, sir. My prop bets usually involve me eating something.

Not the way I read it.

To me, "Whatever more was on the meter" meant you'd match what was on the meter. This is the amount he was looking to win.

It's moot now.

The cabbie can "win" what's going on the meter by not accepting the proposition. If he accepts he's gambling to win the fare around the block to check: about $1.00.

To the OP: nh.

what a fish.

Any reason you didn't wager more "with the nuts" to entice him? Something like 'double the fare' still sounds like a reasonable bet from a passenger dosen't it?

I love stuff like this. My friends all know I play poker and bet on sports. But, they won't ever place any type of sports bets with me (don't get me wrong I am not a good handicapper or anything..but they know I am dealing crappy lines) So, I always make up stupid bets that I will lose money wise, but will provide me with entertainment.
