Default Security in Europe

I'm in Europe just now, in Milan, having just come from Paris.

I was last here a year and a half ago, which was, of course, a year and a half closer to 9/11, but security here is much tighter now than it was, obviously in reaction to what happened in London. There was a much greater police presence on the streets in Paris, especially on public transportation, and here on the streets in Milan too.

Taxi driver here yesterday was listening to talk radio and it was about security and similar issues. Also in Paris, the one taxi driver who spoke English with us was listening to a talk show on the same issue. Anecdotal, to be sure, but seems like the London bombings have hit closer to home here.

can't say I agree with that but I guess these things are necessary now.

Holy Germany 1937, Batman!

Very clever, just about sums it up, this is another shot in the arm for the terrorist cause, if anything this will encourage them even more.

And since they've already come out and given the PC "no profiling" statement,...

PC? To me 'PC' means being overly sensitive for the sole reason of avoiding "Hurt Feelings." Aren't they implementing searches "randomly" so as to avoid being sued?

They are talking about searching people on the tube with big bags, complete madness imho loads of tourists, people going to heathrow on the tube etc. Is impossible, better having sniffer dogs riding the tubes than stop and search stuff.

So, do you just like, nod your head and stand behind whatever they say, no matter how stupid?

Absolute waste of time and money. There are 100's of stations in the various boroughs and surrounding areas. No way they can police them all. A potential wrongdoer will simply scout out a station where there is no police checkpoint. The only thing this new policy will do is piss people off at major transit points like Penn Station.

[/ QUOTE ]

It will only last a couple of weeks.

I agree, this will do absolutely nothing to protect us. If a suicide bomber actually got searched, he would just blow himself up in the station instead of on the train.
