I've had a discussion with Jason_t (and others from school) about this.

But.. yeah, there are some people who claim to be agnostic, but are actually atheist.

Jason actually said he was agnostic'. In that he has the opinion that there is no God, but is also willing to accept that he may be wrong.

my comment wasnt directed at you particularly. you didnt specify what you believed in but i had assumed that you werent an atheist simply because that would make you hypcritical. however, i was simply trying to say that i think its foolish to tell atheists that they are retarded for what they believe in. they are being realists. they do not believe in god and cannot trick themselves into believing in something else.

i guess your arguement is that noone can be certain that there isnt a god as noone can be certain that there is one, so its foolish for people to know that there isnt a god as they are not being realists. however, that is not the correct definition of an atheist.

an atheist is one who does not believe in god. it doesnt say that they are certain that there isnt a god.

therefore, calling someone retarded for their beliefs is what truly is retarded, as you have no knowledge in whether their beliefs are accurate or not and therefore you are being judgmental and close-minded.

Here's the thing though...

Part of the theism debate, is, that there is no scientific way to prove the existence of a God.

When this is the case, it becomes impossible to scientifically DISPROVE the existence of God.


Given this, no one can be 100% certain that there is no God.


Thus, atheism is not a valid viewpoint, IMO.

Agnosticism, however, accepts that there is at least some non zero probability that there exists a God. Thus, making it a valid viewpoint.
