"At any one time, there's usually 500 to a thousand people" online, half of them collegiate, according to Malmuth

I assume that is not counting the pre-collegiate.

...the networks cashed in on Hollywood's fascination with the game with programs like Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown.

Filmed at the Palms Casino Resort, the series already has its entire 2005-6 and 2006-7 seasons in the can...

By 2007, some of those people might actually become celebrities.

"They're not interested in drugs anymore," Malmuth observed, "but they want to play poker."

Someone needs to get outside the book forum more often. Try OOT for a dose of full-immersion reality (but not without protective clothing ).

One out of two ain't bad.

500,000 books. Congrats, Mason. The success of 2+2 books is certainly merited.

I also think he is correct. And even if he isn't, the statement in a news article is +EV for the image of poker. Everything else we read about poker is keyed in on gambling addiction and loose morals. There are some very positive aspects to poker for young adults . . . . like thinking!

without a doubt kids today are not doing drugs nearly as much as they did in the 70's and early-mid 80's and it's not even close.

Whether the poker-craze has anything to do with that I don't know.
I suspect it is just a combination of some anti-drug peer-pressure as well as a generally less social society (computers, internet, video-games).

The reasons WHY are just speculation. The fact that there is less drug-use today than 2 or 3 decades ago is a given.
