Playing poker to finance my life. A piece of advice needed :)
Hi!
I'm thinking of playing poker to finance my life. I have a skin disease named psoriasis which is an annoying and itching one. Hence i had to quit my job as a paramedic and tried a year in authoring dvds and other IT-stuff. A good friend of mine brought up the idea of playing poker (mostly online) to get some money in the wallet. I could stay at home earning money and could take care of my skin. I loved to play poker my whole life, beginning twenty years ago at the age of eight playing poker with my parents [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]. I've played lots of years only homepoker sessions with friends, but i could imagine myself going pro. I've read 'Theory Of Poker' and 'Small Stakes Hold'em'. Further litrature will be ordered to get a good start. I am planning to sell some old stuff to create a 500BB bankroll for .50/1 or maybe 1/2. With hopefully being successful in that i would be able to play higher stakes in future and may create an acceptable income for life with time. That's the plan [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]. Well i'm not a beliver in starting poker on a big bankroll, I believe you should work up the ranks starting with a bankroll of $20 like i did [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]
Your risk is very little, The games are ok, You adjust as you move up the limits and learn alot and improve your game/Leaks(Cheaply). However.... Your in a rush to make money, Which might be a shot in the foot but may not after having read 2+2 books and using their forum. I wish you luck in whatever you chose, Play Tight and aggressive and keep us posted. As said... BONUS WHORE.

The world is open to you as far as online sites go. All about bonuses and rakeback (search the classifieds for that term and something that interests you). You can do very well for yourself. Try casinowhoring also. Easy $

How much can he expect to earn a week with a bankroll of $20? I would think a weekly win of $0.50 would be easily done.

Not sure you can finance your life playing the .50/1 or 1/2 games online. Keep doing other things to make money, get practice and move up in limits. Then hopefully you will be at a level where you can maybe finance your life. Good luck.

A better plan
Play 1-2 at a minimum. Use the extra profits to see a Dr. about that skin problem.
Once your skin problem is taken care of, go out and meet an attractive girl with a good paying job. Marry her. Once you're situated go back to being a paramedic and saving lives. Play poker in your spare time. You're set for life. This is a much more realistic plan than playing .5-1 for a living.

I have to agree that your "plan" to get back to life and out of the house is more realistic than just playing poker all day. Based on the money the online sites are making, and the number of players involved, you are probably at least a 20-1 dog to make a profit playing.
However, of the 5% that are making money, almost all started at .50/$1 games or lower. The .50/$1 game can provide a decent living, if you can four-table and make 2-4bb/hour per table (and yes, many, many players here have done this). With a rakeback deal, a good player should be able to make between $10 and $15 an hour and an excellent player should make up to $20 per hour. How many people are good enough to make this much? I don't know, they keep moving up in limits and making more.............. Dogmeat [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

My post was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. Decent living is relative...
I can't imagine even the best .5/1 players (and the best players would NOT be playing .5/1 by the way), equaling the salary of a paramedic. Decent living? Maybe for a teenager. Not for a 28 yr. old with paramedic skills.
