The Deerhunter. Outstanding film.

I also really liked the first half of Full Metal Jacket (in basic). The second part wasn't nearly as good.

Platoon and Saving Ryan's Privates were also good.

Patton is classic.

Also check out Midway; Tora! Tora! Tora!; Twelve O' Clock High.

Comedies:

It's got to be Stripes and 1942.

What was that one with the handful of British soldiers with little ammunition, holding out against 10,000 angry Zulu Warriors?

"Zulu", I think. Good flick for the 1960's.

Also, "Dam Busters". That's the black and white movie Pink Floyd was always watching in "Pink Floyd The Wall".

do you have any idea how many tons of
water it takes the Germans to make a
ton of steel?

I haven't the least idea...

37 tons...

Apocalypse Now is not really a "war movie." The setting is just a pretext for the retelling of "The Heart of Darkness." If you read the novel first, then watch the movie, you will see the movie is all about the telling of the tale.

[/ QUOTE ]

You make a similar statement about almost any war movie. Eg. Saving Private Ryan isn't really about the war, but tells the tale about the characters in the story...the war is just the backdrop for it. The Great Escape isn't about a war, but about a daring escape; it just has a WWII setting. Schindler's List isn't really about the war, but about a man seeing injustice and trying to overcome it by saving Jews.

Just because a movie isn't a documentary about a war, doesn't mean it's not a war movie.
