Please Study Maslow Before you Decide to \"Go Pro\"
In case anyone here is thinking of going pro and is not familiar with Maslow's hierarchy of needs yet, I would recommend reading:
http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/maslow.html Although pro poker playing might help you with the first three levels, it will do very little for the upper two levels. (As for the third level: pro poker playing would probably only satisfy your belonging needs to the extent that being a member of a gang, or other lowly esteemed section of society would.) |

So the only way we find meaning in our life is through our jobs?

So, what level of maslow's heirarchy does trolling an internet forum serve?

Re: Please Study Maslow Before you Decide to \"Go Pro\"
Again you pro poker players can dream that anyone who does not think you are the [censored] is a troll, but dreaming such and having other pros nod their heads and agree with you will also not make it such.
Some of us can just see through it all. |

Re: Please Study Maslow Before you Decide to \"Go Pro\"
Your job is, hopefully, going to take up more time than any other activity in your life so make a good choice here:
Not a time, and self-actualization wasting one. Good luck! |

Ok, I'll rephrase it. Which level of need are we serving right now?

Re: Please Study Maslow Before you Decide to \"Go Pro\"
Your post and link is very interesting.
There is a book published in 1982... By David Hayano... an anthropologist... After 10 years of observing the California pro poker culture. "Poker Faces: The Life and Work of Professional Poker Players". It addresses all the same issues... In a scientific way. Other than a bigger money pie... And perhaps slightly higher social status of poker... (Maybe someday almost like pro chess or even sports)... I'll bet nothing much has changed... Because one certain constant... Is always human nature. rm+ |

In fact, I dream of the opposite. More time to: visit friends and relatives volunteer, if i so choose make music or other creative but unpaid activity. One day I hope you understand the point that you seem to keep missing. |
