Default How Hard Is It To Do Commentary On Poker?

I was watching Fox Sports and I don't know what the show was called, but it was some European tournament (I think it was in London). 1 guy has KK and the other has A9o. The flop comes up T84. KK checks, A9o bets, KK comes over the top and puts the other guy all-in and he calls. The turn is then a 6, to which the announcer then says "Well that didn't help him" (referring to the guy with A9o).

I usually consider getting 4 outs added as "help" but maybe that's just me?

That is one of my biggest pet peeves in poker coverage.

Example QQ vs. AK all-in preflop

Flop 2-5-9...they say no help to either player. Christ that is a dream flop for QQ, short of a Q you can't do better.

Or when Norman Chad says "he calls, figuring it will be a coinflip situation" for the fiftieth time in the episode.

if you wanna hear bad announcing watch Ultimatebet.net's POker Challenge that is airing on FSN. They say people called when they raised, that they have K6 when they have QQ. It is really really bad.

Apart from giving AK a backdoor straight draw, yes...

To do commentary in poker, you must speak to the level of the general audience and the last thing you need is a sound technical knowledge of the game. Make the millions of tournament chips that they bet seem like actual millions of dollars. And an ability to hype mundane and boring situations is a must.
