On the flop I had him on AA KK QQ AK AQ possibly JJ.
Thus I was very confident I had the best hand and felt like smooth calling here could induce a bet on the turn. Since he was most likely drawing to 2 or 3 outs. I felt the reward was worth the risk.

It is not a play I would normally make but I decided to try it out here.

Well, if you want to lose money, it's always a good idea to let an opponent draw for cheap, or even give him a free card on the turn if he so chooses.
With no read I bet the flop and I don't get cute. If you're going to check-raise the turn, I'd make it PSB. Also it's best to check/call on the river here with a medium/weak strength hand. Poker 101.

What hand do you put him on that you're worried about? Worst case scenario is he has KQs in which case you screwd yourself. On other hands such as KK, AK, AQ, QQ, AJ you will be able to extract more on this line. You're going to lose the hand more often but hopefully the increased pot size will make up for it.

If you make a read on someone for KK, QQ, JJ then what line do you take to extract the most?

This being said, I'd still raise the flop.
