Default \"Protecting\" my hand?

UTG+1 is fishy, 51 vpip, .6 pfr ~200 hands
MP3 just sat down.

Party Poker 0.5/1 Hold'em (9 handed) converter

Preflop: Hero is Button with 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. MP3 posts a blind of $0.5.
1 fold, UTG+1 calls, 1 fold, MP2 calls, MP3 (poster) checks, CO calls, Hero calls, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: (7 SB) Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (7 players)
SB checks, BB bets, UTG+1 calls, MP2 calls, MP3 calls, CO calls, Hero raises, SB folds, BB calls, UTG+1 calls, MP2 calls, MP3 calls, CO calls.

Turn: (9.50 BB) 6[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (6 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, MP2 checks, MP3 checks, CO checks, Hero bets, BB calls, UTG+1 calls, MP2 folds, MP3 calls, CO calls.

River: (14.50 BB) 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (5 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, MP3 bets, CO folds, Hero raises, BB folds, UTG+1 calls, MP3 calls.

Final Pot: 20.50 BB

After looking at this hand again, I'm wondering if I should have just called the flop, then raised the turn when no diamond falls. (I assume that BB would bet out again, otherwise I would just bet.) but I'm not sure.

And then my raise on the river.. does that seem like MP3 just made a backdoor flush or straight? Or am I just seeing ghosts?

Thx.

You played this hand perfectly. Now it's your job to figure out why.

I got in trouble with the whole "waiting for the turn to protect my hand" strategy. I'd link to the thread about it, but I don't want to search for it... here's the short version. Basically, draws are going to stay to the end no matter how you bet anyway, so bet and raise for value for those time the flush doesn't hit.

Bottom set with lots of players, this seems pretty straightforward...

Default Thanks for the replies

This hand was bugging me; it just didn't feel right. Thanks for the replies, and a boost of confidence with that play.

The goal in this situation is not to protect your hand. The goal is to push your gigantic equity edge for value. With that many callers trapped between you and the raiser, raising is automatic.

If you like money, you'll raise the flop.

I just call the river. EDIT: hm, ok, what am I missing... why don't we want overcalls on this river? Or are we assuming that UTG and BB will call two most of the time because the pot is so big?

Without a read I might consider not raising this river. You might lose an overcall, which you didn't, and the bettor might not call a raise if he was just betting top pair, but perhaps he did.

There also used to be a lot of discussions here about raising w small PP on the button, which is +EV although a lot of people used to argue against it. Since you have at least one read that a weak player is in the pot, along with a poster and other limpers and you have position I think a raise preflop would be another way to play the hand.
