Default Serial vs PS/2 Mice

I am still using an ancient ball mouse with a serial connector. I've just never gotten around to buying a new one since this one seems to be fine to use. My question is, as far as speed and cpu usage, is the PS2 format a lot better than serial? I ask because I was watching my processor CPU usage, and when I move the mouse around a lot, the usage % jumps all the way up to almost 30%. Would it be easier on my cpu do get a new PS2 mouse? Also, how do USB mice stack up here?

Thanks,

CF

Default Re: Serial vs PS/2 Mice

I've never heard of serial mice using more cpu use than ps/2. If they did, it would only be noticable on an extremely old machine.

USB is the the best option. USB mice can do higher resolution, and some motherboards don't even even have PS2 ports anymore. USB might use slightly more CPU than PS2, again, only noticable on an extremely old machine.
