When you get to the search page in the Recent Archives, set the "Date Range" fields to something like "newer than 12 months and older than 6 months".

Although we limit the search range for performance reasons, this does not mean that you can't search for older items. All that is necessary is to set the "Newer than" and "Older than" fields appropriately. For instance assume the maximum search is set at 4 months and you want posts that are 6 months old. Simply set the "Newer than" field to (for example) 8 months and the "Older than" field to (for example) 4 months.
