I live in Brooklyn. I do not think license plate theft is a growing problem.

My GF's brother's car broke down on a fairly major road. He had to walk a half-mile or so to a garage.
When he got back the license plates had been stolen...he did not have any kind of vanity plate. Just a regular license plate. Earlier today I was driving behind a guy with vanity plate "DMB FAN" which I observed was especially gay. There was another guy with "GOD BEWTH" which I just thought was kind of weird.
