I think a difference here is that in that hand you were (if memory serves) heads-up, so even if you bet and were called, the pot wasn't going to get out of hand. With four people in the hand, the chances of an unmanagable pot grow exponentially.

Think that the problem started on the flop when you only bet 50. There are probable flush and straight draws available on the flop as well as underpairs so you should bet enough to make it wrong for them to call. Try 100 or even 150. The 3 digit bets get WAY more respect in level one that 50 or 75. The turn may play way differently with 1 opponent but in this situation, I think that you did as well as you could without pushing to protect your hand. Got to think that you have to lay down on the river or lose to a flush, a slow played over pair or flopped set, a straight or even a 9-10 two pair. Tough hand.
