Everything depends on my reads of the opponents of course.

Right, what more has to be discussed on this topic?

What I ment has to do with the read was IF I should raise, not How much.

The intresting part imo (maybe not yours) is How much to raise in an unraised pot and I think 4bb + 1bb/limper (except maybe from the blinds) is a good amount. But I see so many newcomers on this site raising like 3bb after 2 limpers and other weird stuff.

This is common wisdom and you'll even find it in Skeme's FAQ:

Your standard raising technique should be 3 or 4xBB + 1BB for each limper already in the pot.

Like everything in NL, don't take it as gospel and feel free to ajust to the table.

No offend, but I don't see why a thread like this has to be bumped. Not many hidden secrets to be discovered.

I have figured out It's "common wisdom", but I want to know who are using that as a rule of thumb and who doesn't etc.

Good players especially.

I don't have much to add about preflop raising amounts. A lot of what's been said in here is good. I particularly like what Ghazban had to say.

I will add my thoughts on what amount NOT to raise. NEVER miniraise preflop. It's a tell, it doesn't get any respect and you are just asking for someone to blow you off your hand with a preflop steal. Next time you see someone miniraise preflop, reraise 2 1/2 times his amount (in position) then bet 2/3 - full pot on the flop no matter what it is. Free money.

Also, I never (I should never say never) raise 3x BB or less even if it's opened to me on the button. The only rare exception is if the blinds never ever defend then I can reduce my pfr amount to less than 4x. But that's rare. When you raise to only 3x, it gets no respect and allows the blinds or those who have position on you to get in cheaply with drawing hands that can stack you or outplay out.

My 2c.
