Default Showdown with the boss....(long)

Many asked for a report on my last day at work.

Well, today was the day. Let me clarify that there is no love lost between my dispatcher(capt idiot) and me. As you'll see. He's treated me like absolute crap for the 12 mos he's been there. Literally from day 1. This is unanimously confirmed by everyone who has seen our run ins with each other along with his special treatment to other contractors. Many, many times i've heard the office say, 'We don't know what he has against you Bern, or what you did to make him treat you that way. He's just, a dick.' I get along great with everyone else in there. This guy makes everyone miserable. And i mean everyone. Which i had found out upon talking with some other office people. It was refreshing to know i wasn't the only one that was aggravated by him.

I took my time this morning going in. I've always called in if i was going to be late or gone. Not today. Though we don't really have any set start time anyways. Just whatever pattern we've established. On my way down, i yap to my soundboard driver on the 2-way, telling them what i'm up to and how the weekend went. They're wishing they could be there since i couldn't have picked a better time. Turns out, the other driver in my area called in so they had to cover his stuff. On top of that, capt idiots boss is in the office, along with 2 corporate bosses over them. Im grinning already.

I mosey in and decide to say my good byes to the people who backed me during my stay. I stop in at Gail's office. Tell her the deal. Shes ecstatic and wishes she could be a fly on the wall when i tell capt. idiot im quitting. She's been there watching me get shafted since the day capt idiot got there. She know the full history of us. She calls in another guy who i wish the best. I tell her ill let her know how it goes in a minute. As i leave i hear her do a woo hoo, and just catch her raise her arms in a touchdown motion.

I go out and get my 3 shirts with the Co. logo on them. The same used ones they gave to me when i started that they grabbed right off the dirty floor(literally) to give to me. I grab my 2 way phone.

I come out of another office from saying good luck to someone and capt idiot appears. I lead him into his office saying these (in my arms) are for him.

"So what's the deal?" he says.

"I'm outta here." I say firmly.

He bobs his head a bit, chews on his tongue a little then says, "So that's it huh?"

"Yep."

"So you just come in at 10:15 without a call and that's it?" More head bobbing.

"Sure!"

More bobbing/chewing, I walk out of his office.

I hear some statement about ethics and just say, 'Whatever.' And head back to Gails office.

I sit down and say, "That went pretty smooth really." She starts to say something, but something catches my attention in the hall. Mind you, i am about 3 mins away from leaving the place if it ends at this point. I figured i was done so a see ya/ill keep in touch line was all that was left to say. I hold up my hand telling her to hold on a sec. A moment passes and capt idiot appears in the doorway. Teeth clenched and seething.

"We need you off the premises"

"Why? I'm saying good bye to someone."

"Well, i want you off the premises"

"I can't say good bye to someone?"

Then it starts, he just can't contain himself. He just couldn't let it go at what it was. It would've been sooo easy, but no.

Some brief highlights: We went at it for about a good 10 mins. Him bringing up points, me countering him with very specific examples and specific corrections on events/topics in clear detail. To which he would then go to another topic. I basically counterpunched the whole time.

He asks me if it was because of my route being given away for today. I respond saying sarcastically that yes, that must be the reason. It's been so rosy here up to that point that that was the only thing it could be.

He mentions that they've gone out of their way to accomodate me. I call him on that saying they have done absolutely nothing to help me out in any way. They've done nothing extra for me at all. I gave him 3 specific examples. One item that i did for myself, he claims they did it for me. I called BS, explained thoroughly how it went down, but said if it really helps you sleep, go ahead and claim it. More power to ya. Feather in your cap.

He brings up uniform codes, i give him 3 ongoing concrete cases of special treatment to me regarding the code that isn't applied to anyone else. Head is bobbing and chewing again.

He brings up that when he first met me i've had a 'tude, blah blah. I remind him the 1st time we met he was accusing me of things i never did. Couldn't have done, since i wasn't even there on the day in question. I told him it was a wonderful way to introduce and endear himself to me as my new dispatcher. Top notch atta boy all the way. Now he tries a 1/2 ass attemt at an apology for it. I tell him, sarcastically, it's real sweet and all that he waited all this time to say that. It must really warm his heart inside.

He mentions he knows i play cards 40 hours a week, building a bankroll and preparing to leave. I mention i play about 30 a week and primarily evenings and at night. It has never interfered with my job. What i do on my off time is none of his business. This one actually caught me off gaurd a bit as i've never told him i played cards. However, i think i know where he got that from since some of the phrasing he used i remember who i said it too.

He mentions that i've been undependable citing time off for funerals/going to hospitals...(he says this like i was using an excuse for time off) More head bobbing. This one just about gets me out of my chair. This was a low, low frickin blow given what i've gone through in the last 12 mos. (i just lost a close buddy 2 weeks ago. He was in the hospital since the 4th of july. Emotional rollercoaster ride all the way)

I mention that yes, i have had one helluva year. I've gone to 3 funerals. 2 involved extensive hospital time on rollercoaster rides. (ruptured aneurysms aren't fun) On top of all the other crap that was going on. But i thanked him, and him personally for kicking me in the teeth every step of the way while i go through it. Stating he's just a wonderful guy. Meanwhile, others that call in regularly never get any flack for anything.

For instance, in the middle of the 16 days going through losing my dad in the hospital, he told me 'i' was to call in at a certain time. I told him i call in in plenty of time to cover my route. He snidely says they just don't know if it is because i just didn't want to work. This is just a small, small sample of what i had to deal with this A-hole.

More bobbing/chewing. He mentions again that i have to leave the premises. I mention again i want to say good bye to someone. He motions to Gail, who's had a ringside seat during all of this, like go ahead while he stands there. I look over to Gail, she's smirking at me and stands up, holds out her hand and says in cheery tone, "nice working with you sir!" I grin back at her saying, "You too. BTW, it's hard to leave this warm and wonderful place." I can see she wants to crack up a bit. I continue, "Can't you just, feel the love in this company?"

On that i turn and walk out. Capt idiot actually escorts me to the roll up door and out. Staying 1 1/2 paces behind. Like he's a security gaurd or something.

I called Gail later. I told her, "Well, you wanted to be the fly on the wall." I could tell she was glowing over the phone. I told her that was my parting present to her. She got a good laugh on that one and thanked me.

She mentioned she was absolutely embarassed to be part of the company after the display that capt idiot put on. "Unbelievable!" She said her jaw dropped when he pulled out the funeral line. She said she would've found me more than justified to take him out to the warehouse and 'beat the [censored] out of him' for that one.

I told her i had much more to say, but after that exchange she didn't want me to be tempted to pop him, so she thought it ended at the right time. I told her i was too relaxed to go that far. She mentioned she felt like doing it for me then. Evidently someone in an office next door had to close the door since capt idiot was so loud. Which also means that most likely, the 'whole' office go to hear him sound like the grade 'A' A-hole that he is.

With that, i went to pick up my mom and take her to lunch on this fine sunny day!

Have a good one.

Awesome report bernie. I only wish you told him to go [censored] himself at the end. I actually hate this guy now too.

Congrats and best wishes with the new roll

Thanks. It did feel damn good.

I get to go back in there 2 more times to get my last 2 checks. That ought to be interesting.

They probably could. But i'd much rather get them in person. Why give them that much more room to screw with me? I wouldn't put it past the place to not mail my check for 89 days. Ill happily take out the 'middleman' of the US mail and go to the direct source.

Besides, i get to hopefully see some buds and watch capt idiots face clench again if he's there.

Mind you, i won't be opening my mouth to him. Or instigating him other than maybe my mere presence. I'll only fire if fired upon. i'm sure he'll still be smoldering a little over how it went down.

I've pondered the idea of calling OSHA on them. Just for the hell of it. But it would've been much better if i did that while i was working there. They have violations up the ying. Nice thought to have capt idiot deal with that. The turnover rate is so high there, driverwise, they wouldn't really be affected by this.

BTW...Did i mention that this place cut our contract/wage by 30% a month ago? Yep, THIRTY PERCENT. I was told by a corporate, in another wonderful 1 on 1 company moment, that we should be happy with that since at least we still have our jobs. I told him that's easy to say. After all, it isn't 'his' wage being cut.

God, the stories i have of this place could fill a small book.

WOW!!.......

When I asked to hear about your last day, I had no idea how badly you had been treated by this bunghole, as evidenced by this great, blow-by-blow write up! I'm hoping that his bosses were within earshot...hell, if I were you, I might even send them a letter apologizing for your part of the outburst, while explaining what a 1st class dick this guy is.....

....revenge is best served cold.

All of this just makes your good fortune even sweeter, eh?!

Thanks much for the terrific story, and it sure looks like this ends up as.....

....."one for the good guys".

Very disappointing report. I was hoping that as Capt Idiot was escorting you out, he got a little physical with you and then you beat the crap out of him!
