Default Lowest rake in Vegas?

Is the Horseshoe still the lowest rake in town at $2 max? Or did they bump up their rake last fall as several other strip casino's did - ala Mirage and Bellagio.

A couple of my friends and I are heading out in a week and a half and just trying to figure out some places to play besides the normal get-ups...

If you are looking for some new places to play, I wouldn't base your decision on rake structure. Go for overall room quality. Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, and Monte Carlo are all within easy walking distance of each other.

Exactly, and I'm not.

I was just curious if Binion's still has the low rake as we were considering going down there to play to mix it up a little, and of course to play there just to say we did.

I doubt we'll even mess with the Luxor or Mandalay Bay but we'll definitely hit the MC and the Excalibur.

Rake cost isn't the mitigating factor on where we play...simply asking, that's all.

Good idea!

The $2 rake is a 'summer special'. Pretty good deal for $10/20 players.

The current rake is $3 max - no jackpot.

Still a pretty good deal. The guy I talked to there said that was the lowest rake in town. I suppose there are a few other places that have a $3 max rake still.

I have never played at Binion's so I can't comment.

I was in Vegas 3 weeks ago and played at the other places you've mentioned. Luxor and Excalibur are total second hand smoke fests in my opinion. The atmosphere just seems trashy to me.

Mandalay Bay has a nice room and good dealers but take note of the recent thread about their rules. Monte Carlo has a nice room but that place drove me nuts last time. There are bad players and then there are players who don't even know the rules of the game. I played against a few of those at MC and they took $100 from me before I left for the Bellagio.

For example:
I'm holding KK and of course a lady without the foggiest clue of how to play is holding AA. She didn't re-raise me pre-flop. An Ace comes out on the flop and she check-called me the whole way. Argh

I'm sticking with the Bellagio and Mirage exclusively from now on. I don't see any reason to go anywhere else -- you can still find loose passive players who will pay you off, smoke free, and the service is much better than any other casino.

My $0.02

Not a bad idea. My last several trips those were my main hangouts - mainly the Mirage. I do like the MC game though - as you said the players there are usually pretty bad and several weak-tight old men. I've had decent sessions every time I've played over there.

You mention in your post about the lady with AA against your KK. You are lucky that she played so badly and saved you a few bets.

I've never been real excited about playing at Excalibur or Luxor - I've seen the rooms and they don't do much for me. In the evenings, the smoke was so thick in there you could cut it with a knife. Not my style...

I would be interested in playing at MB but the whole rules mess over there seems like a cluster. I'm sure it's not as bad as it sounds but I can live without playing there.

Without a doubt, we'll spend a majority of our time at the Mirage and Bellagio - although with the WPO going on at the same time I'm not sure if that makes the games better or worse. I guess we'll see.

Whereabouts you from in Austin?

My sentiments exactly on the Luxor and Excalibur. If you're gonna play low-limit, I wouldn't expect the WPO to affect the games but that is just a total guess.

As for that lady in MC, I disagree about her saving me a few bets. If she had re-raised me pre-flop and raised me on the flop, I would have had an idea what I was up against and released my kings. At least that's what I'd do with AA.

I'm in South Austin - Circle C area to be exact.
