I don't think either one of them played it *terribly*,

You're all on crack, button limped in with 43s after one limper.

I think you played it fine. Obviously the button made a bad call, but it worked out on the river. You check here because you may be behind (it certainly looked to me like the Button was representing top pair on the flop), or to induce a bluff.

The only thing I might do differently is to smooth call the flop raise and check-raise the turn if a heart doesn't come off. But I wouldn't make that play often.
