Default Hypothetical situation

You have a very small bankroll, say, less than $500. You have about $10,000 of assets which includes your car, electronics, jewelery, and other stuff.

Pokah is ni, you ruv pay pokah, and you have grown weary of "regular" work such as retail, corporate, etc. You have 5 years of poker experience in both cash games and tournaments although it would be fair to say you are probably above average in both. You are (in your mind at least) a solid player in both online and live play. You prefer live games to online but have no qualms about playing online. You don't live near a casino, so you'll have to either play strictly online or move to where the games are and play online on your off days or whatever.

Has anyone (and/or WOULD anyone) liquidate most of their assets and take a shot at becoming a pro (or semi-pro)?

I wouldn't know, I keep liquidating my assests to pay for travel, and other things I want to do.

Oh wait, there's a kind of answer there. Problem is that the assets you list tend to have less resale value than you expect.

$500 is more than enough to build a bankroll from.

Aside from that, interesting hypothetical. I hated my job and took 3 weeks off to have fun playing poker. Went to a casino, played a $100 buy in and won $4,000. Not worked full-time since.

Is it doable? Sure. Take your cash, bonus whore and best of luck to you. It won't be easy, you run a high risk of ruin if you are planning to pay for anything just yet. If oyu live with your parents, have no kids, aren't dating and don't spend much money....it increases your chances. Still, not going to be easy from $500. Don't sell the assets yet!

Sell the jewelry unless it is a family heirloom. Guys don't need jewelry.

Don't sell off the things you worked for, except maybe the jewelry. Instead, read Homer's post on building a` bankroll (search for it) and then hit up bonuswhores.com and build a bankroll from there.

Good luck,
Matt

I'm guessing you'r enot amrried yet, eleventy. I inherited some jewelry years ago, and I have plenty in store for when my wife gets upset.

Just kidding.

I agree, if you have assets that you don't value/have no use for...chuck em. The Homner post that you were referred too is under Microlimit FAQ, top listing I believe.

i wouldn't sell anything other than the jewelery. especially don't sell the PC if you're going to play on-line
on the other hand, if you're such a solid player online, then wouldn't you have a bigger bankroll already?

Get a bigger bankroll. Grind small, until you save 10K, then go pro.
If you start at 600, it'll take you 150 hours or less to double at 1-2, then another 150hrs or less to double at 2-4
then another 150hrs to double at 5-10 then another 250 hrs at 5-10 to bring you to 10K. Thats a total of 700hrs which is probably much less if you play multiple tables well.
700 hrs is 35 weeks at 20hrs a week. That is all you need.

Good advice all. I was actually considering this, albeit only very slightly. The only live poker I can play is 1/2 or 2/2 no fold'em, meh. I was actually more interested to hear if anyone had every done something similar. I know ZeeJustin dropped out of school to play and the story of Scotty Nguyen grinding it out on penny tables until he built his bankroll, but no specifics on either.
