Apply SNG skills and strategy to a MTT?

Would it be correct for me to apply my SNG strategy to a MTT? Meaning play REALLY tight in the first three blind levels and open up and steal my way to victory after that?

Or should I be playing more hands/putting myself in more coinflip situations?

Sorry if these are newbie questions.
