Default Sure Oscar Winners

Clarkmeister's post about Oscar betting lines made me think that there is no one who I'm sure will win the Oscar this year. (Chris Cooper seems the most likely.) I can remember the following performances that, when I saw them, I was sure they would win:

-John Gielgud in Arthur

-Angelica Huston in Prizzi's Honor

-Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman

-Dustin Hoffman in Rainman

-Judy Dench in Shakespeare in Love

-Joe Pesci in Goodfellas

-Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects

-Marlon Brando in The Godfather

Default A few more

How about:

Kevin Spacey in American Beauty

Tom Hanks in Philadelphia

Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting

Kathy Bates in Misery

Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs

I stopped caring about the Oscars the year that Forrest Gump got best picture over both Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction.

Of course, now that I can actually bet on them, I'm paying attention again.

I didn't see Philadelphia, Misery, or The Silence of the Lambs in the theaters when they first came out, but I can sure agree with those. I thought Spacey was very good in American Beauty, but it didn't strike me as one of those sure things. Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting, absolutely agree, a stunning performance, I'd forgotten about that one.

C'mon, do you really think Pulp Fiction would win an Oscar for best movie? I would think 50% of the academy members hated that movie. I loved Fargo and 90% of the people I know who are my age or older despised it.

I think the seqeul to Bowling for Columbine should be entitled Betting for Oscar.

No, but it was at that point that I realized I couldn't give two turds what a bunch of old geezers say. I don't need them to tell me what a good movie is. A good movie is one that I enjoy.

I haven't watched or paid attention to any award show in years and years. Seriously, whats the point? Is one supposed to watch the show, slap their forehead and say "Silly me for not realizing that Forrest Gump was better than Shawshank. I am glad that I have been shown the error of my ways, as my opinion clearly is meaningless and misguided"

feh on awards shows.

This is why I would be very hesitant to put money on an Oscar "favorite". Far too many sure things never win in awards events.

I guess I should admit I didn't see any of those movies in theaters either, I just thought they were great performances.

I always like Robin Willams and thought he was one of the funniest guys around. I've been amazed by some of his more seroius rolls lately.
