Default problem getting 1600x1200

I have kind of a quirky problem here.

Running an old Pentium III 500MHz 256MB Windows 98 machine. I could not get it to do 1600x1200. It tops out at 1280x1024 even on a Sony 20" CRT definitely capable of 1600x1200.

I just installed a Radeon 9250 128MB video card thinking that would do the trick. Now it allows 1600x1200, but it doesn't really work. Instead of 1600x1200 filling the entire screen, only a 1280x1024 portion of the screen is displayed. I can use the mouse to scroll around, but this is obviously useless for four-tabling since I'd need to see everything on the screen.

If anyone out there knows how to fix this, I sure would appreciate it!

THANKS

Yeah, that card should definitely be able to do 1600x1200. Looking at the Specs, sheet, the maximum refresh rate for 1600x1200 is 120, so you might want to try bumping that down if it is set too high. If this doesn't work, your monitor probably doesn't support that resolution.

That annoying scroll-around-thing is called "virtual desktop". Everyone hates it.

From what you describe it seems the CRT cannot handle the resolution. If it should be able to perhaps there's a reset procedure or a setting in the menu system of the CRT itself.

What's the CRT model number?

Sometimes you need to change the resolution setting in more than one place within the display properties window.

Right click desktop > select properties > Click Setting tab > Advanced > Adapter Tab > list all modes > select the setting.

Then click on all the other tabs on that window to be sure you have changed other possible settings. For example, I have an "ATI Displays" tab where I need to change the settings as well.

Thanks everyone, but I'm still not getting it.

It's the Sony Trinitron Multiscan 20sfII, and I've seen it do 1600x1200 before, just not on my computer.

I've tried resetting it. No luck there.

I have the Setting > Advanced > Adapter tabs. But I have no List All Modes setting. The only thing I can change in the adapter tab is the refresh rate (which I've tried at all of them: 60, 70, 75).

I thought it might be the driver. This was not the original monitor that came with the computer. But I've updated that too and still nothing.

Then I tried re-installing the video card driver. No effect.

I also went into the registry (which always makes me nervous) and changed all the "MaxResolution" settings to 1600,1200.

After all that, I'm still stuck with that virtual desktop. Very peculiar.

Googling around, that monitor can do 1600x1200. However:

Maximum Resolution
Maximum : Up to 1600x1200, 60 Hz
Macintosh : 1280x1024, 75 hz
Flicker free : 1280x1024, 75 Hz

I'd rather gouge my eyes out than put up with 1600x1200 at 60 Hz.

Do you have the right monitor selected under display settings?

Right click desktop > select properties > Click Setting tab > Advanced > Monitor Tab.

If it says “(unknown monitor)”, “Default Monitor”, or “Plug and Play Monitor” you should change it to “Sony Trinitron Multiscan 20sfII“. If the monitor is already set correctly and it’s still not working, try changing it to “Super VGA 1600x1200” and see if that does anything.
