[ QUOTE ]
He's getting 3:1 from the pot on the original flop bet, so if his bet folds out both the button and small blind 25% of the time on the flop, it is automatically a break-even bet. Add in that he can hit his gutshot, or sometimes just a pair and win, and he only has to fold out both players about 15% of the time to break-even. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah the hand history flop pot is wrong, sorry. |

Who do you think is going to bet this flop so we can check-raise? Also, it would suck to give a free card on a coordinated board (such as this one). Generally (and in this hand), i like Hero's line better. [/ QUOTE ] There is nothing wrong with Hero's line so long as he mixes in a lot of check-raises. It does suck to give a free card on a coordinated board such as this one. But if noone has the draw, or a pair, or sometimes overcards, it likely will not get bet. Then there was no real danger in giving the free card anyways. What's more important is that you are neglecting the pot size. Giving free cards incorrectly gets worse the bigger the pot. We are talking about a pot with 3 small bets in it being contested short-handed. You should not worry about occasionally losing this small of a pot if you can also occasionally get someone to go off for several big bets in a small pot because you went for the check-raise. |

Thus, i think this is a bad time to try and check-raise. There will virtually always be a draw/pair/overcards, so a free card is going to hurt us somehow by giving our opponents infinite odds to whatever they have. [ QUOTE ] What's more important is that you are neglecting the pot size. Giving free cards incorrectly gets worse the bigger the pot. [/ QUOTE ] The small size of the pot is what pushes me towards betting out. If the pot were larger, we would want to check-raise to protect our hand since betting out wouldn't protect it. But in this case, by betting we lay 4:1, which is not enough for anyone (except a monster draw, who is never folding anyway) to draw profitably. Betting risks 1 bet to win 3. Check-raising risks 2 bets to win 4 or 5, plus there's no way the initial bettor is ever going to fold to our check-raise. Check-raising is unnecessarily fancy. We have the best hand in a small pot. Just bet. |
