Default Do Dealers make a fortune?

I heard of dealers being tipped $3-$5 per pot by the winner, depending on pot size.

Even at 30 hands an hour, that's $90-$150 an hour plus whatever the Casino wages are.

Is this normal? Wow.

3-5 per hand, not hardly, lol. The low / mid limit games the $1 per pot is customary, but you have to figure in your chopped blinds (no action), preflop raise with no calls, and so on.

The other option: Ask a few dealers and see what kind of response they give you, hehe.

I am a dealer. Tunica Horseshoe. We dont make nearly that much. Wages are $5.00 hr so discount that as anything at all. Those wages come out to zero after taxes on my check after tip declaration. I am fortunate to be in one of the best places in the country to deal. Pretty decent tips and low cost of living. But commonly it really is only a $1 a hand or so. There are those that toke more. And there are those that stiff you all nite long. And there are games where after 1/2 down you leave it with 1-6.00. Then of course there are break times. commonly a 3-4 game push then a 1/2 break. And if more dealers than games comein for the next shift before your 8 hrs is up then your out of the lineup too. So you can go to work and only get 8-10 downs. Or like tonite when I went in we were UNUSUALLY slow. 7 dealers, 4 games. Two dealers will go home with no work or we will end up going on for 1 down, break for 1 down, and NOBODY makes money. So we take turns leaving early. Fortunately I saw a nice lineup in 20-40 and made a nice lick more than I would have dealing.

Dealers dont get rich dealing. But it isnt a bad living either. Of course I didnt have benefits for 20 months till I got seniority to go full time. Sounds fun huh?

Interesting. At our favorite local card barn in NYC the game of choice tends to be Baby NL (1-2 blinds, $250 max buyin) tournaments, or high-limit rotation. The rotation games are mostly seniors and serious plays, and the tipping is shite(the dealer seems to be lucky if they get one at all). The NL games are a different animal alltogether, the average dealer toke is $1, but most people who win big pots tips $3-$10. For example my last big score was nearly $400, I left $10 behind for the dealer. Factor in the wasted time dealing tournaments (a must to get in the shear numbers of players, they have had have 10+ tables rockin, the biggest in NYC), the horrible hours (open at 7PM for the mostpart, or 12 hour shifts on the weekends), and the mob-like goomba mentality of some of the younger players who come in (and one or two of the older serial killer types) and you have a job I would NOT want to take! Imagine being surrounded all day long by your favorite game, and you cannot play! What a horrible way to live.

The moral of this story - Tip your dealers well!

Be glad you're allowed to play. According to one I talked to, the foxwoods dealers are not allowed to play. The guy I talked to was planning to quit before the WPT event started.

Oh I love my Job. I do make a fairly decent living. I do get to play. Tho ONLY when we are dressed in our black & whites and on the clock. We are NOT allowed to play in any tournaments tho. Thats a drag. But it's still a great Job. I just didnt want to paint a glorified picture for the posters question.

So you're saying that the only time you can play is when you're working? In other words, you're getting paid to play? Am I reading this right?

If I am, why do they not allow you to come in on off days in street clothes?

The rule at Horseshoe says that employees at the casino can NOT gamble. They used to be able to play whenever they like but that's another story. However, they do allow props. He is technicly proping the game which he can only do while on the clock.

The comprehensive answer to the question at hand is, like it so often is when dealing with poker, situational. It really depends on where you are dealing, and how good you are at your job. I know a few dealers in AZ who were making low six figures plus great medical benefits. However, they were very good at what they did, and this was before dealers at that particular casino were forced to report large portions of their tips. I have played in games that FishHead was dealing, and I know that he is one of the better dealers in that cardroom. Accordingly, I tip him better than the lousy dealers.

Dealers make more or less depending on both their level of proficience, and their location.
