Default what\'s the best way to get a first class ticket (domestic flight)?

I know this is supposed to be a post concerning the stock market, but I thought some of you might have a few suggestions. Of course, paying $3k or so is out of the question.

Should I

i) buy a coach ticket and try to upgrade the day of the flight

ii) try to get a good deal on orbitz.com (or otherwise)

iii) just bite the bullit and pay the damn $3k

iv) none of the above

thanks for your help.

The great unanswered question for so many of us business travellers. A few questions:

1. Do you have status on any airline?
2. What is your itinerary? - certain routes use larger planes with more first class seats.

Purchasing a coach ticket hoping for an upgrade at the airport is useless unless you have status on an airline. In addition, if you buy a heavily discounted ticket you're last in line for any upgrade.
