Default Low end of a straight action on river...

This was a live game at a casino in Indiana.

2-5 NL I had stacks ranged from $100-$1500. This was a Sunday afternoon table, one or two good players, mostly recreational players. The table was loose, very loose, family pots occured and 8 folks would frequently put $5 bucks in the pot and we would all limp on in. It was in this environment that the following situation arose.

HERO is the SB and is dealt:
3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] , 4 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

About 8 players limp HERO completes.

Preflop pot of $40.

FLOP: 5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

HERO has the bad end of a straight in a field of limpers.
I figure someone will bet into this and I can CR so I check.
3 players check and the VILLAIN bets $10, one player calls and I raise $40.

VILLAIN calls $40 and everyone checks and the pot contains. $150.

The turn is a J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]
Hero bets $100
VILLAIN calls.

At this point I feel my hand is well defined. Everyone SHOULD know that I have one of the three straights or perhaps a set. But No raise preflop and my position might favor the straight.

The river is a 2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

HERO ????
I checked, I honestly thought that we would split the pot or I was beat. Opinions ??

Villain
Bets $100
This guy seemed smart enough but not really much of a killer instinct, I did not believe he was bluffing. I did not think that he would bet.

VILLAIN's remaining stack was about $175 I had enough to push him all-in if I thought it was wise.

HERO: ???

bet the river but seeing that you checked i would stick the rest in there. most players will raise the turn if they flopped the straight.

I think my mistake was not betting the river.

He had the exact same hand as me, well 3,4o little straight.

I actually folded to his river bet.. OOPS !!

I figured I was beat, I mean who limps with 3,4o besides me. I figured once he called the turn we both had straights and we both knew were we stood. High straight wins bad straight loses.

Looking back.. I think he was enough of a noob to believe his little straight was the nuts and thought he had me.

In general though.... You fold the little straight to resistance don't you ??

I did not consider sets possible and I considered two pair unlikey. There was nothing but limping preflop. So I did NOT fear a pocket pair that had become a set. And actually I doubted that anyone would have limped with 34. Maybe his 34 was suited ? My best guess as to what he had was 89suited. So I laid down a tie. When you have rags that are barely worth the $3 completion of the SB into a $40 pot it is hard to believe that someone paid $5 into a pot that was $7 or $12 when he limped.

Thanks guys..
Thought I messed up. I totally did not expect a bet from this guy, bad read, surprise bet led to foolish laydown.

Thanks for your replies.

Why?

I think most people limp with 55, 66, 77 in this situation.

If he's limping 89s, he's probably limping 56s and 67s too.

This player must be a real nit if you're laying this down... or you are.
